Political dream eats up Irom Sharmila's 16-year-long hunger strike
The 'Iron lady' of Manipur Irom Sharmila has finally ended her 16-year-long fast or, rather say non-violent protest against the government over AFSPA. She will now be entering into politics to make a mark over her agitation.
Irom was on a hunger strike since 2000 against the controversial Armed Forces Specials Powers Act (AFSPA). She was force fed through nasal tubes and was also arrested several times.
Sharmila while addressing the media said, "I will break my fast as the government has failed to give any positive response... I will fight elections to resolve the issues."
She began her non-violent protest after 10 people were killed by troops of the Assam Rifles near a bus stop at Malom, in the outskirt of Imphal.Published On : Jul 26, 2016 08:17 PM
